Almería surrendered to the Catholic Monarchs on 23 December 1489. After the conquest the Alcazaba was adapted to artillery with a third enclosure; in the 16th century the city was ravaged by earthquakes, plague and pirate raids, and watchtowers such as La Garrofa, Torrecárdenas, El Perdigal and Torregarcía went up along its coast.
