A coastal stronghold finished in 1773 to house cavalry, the westernmost of those Carlos III had built to defend the east of Almería and the Cabo de Gata; it drew its water from the nearby Amoladeras well. The army left it in the 1830s; from 1857 it was a customs guard barracks, and from 1941 a Guardia Civil post.
