- Birthplace of Trajan and Hadrian
Scipio Africanus settled his wounded soldiers here in 206 BCE, on a Turdetanian village, and it was the first Roman city founded in Hispania and outside Italy. The emperors Trajan and Hadrian came from it, and it was Hadrian who added the Nova Urbs, the monumental quarter of wide streets a visitor walks today. That extension was abandoned, but the old city lived on under the town of Santiponce until the 12th century.
