The Granada coast surrendered to Castile in December 1489, under terms signed at Almuñécar. In 1569, in the Alpujarras war, Aben Aboo attacked it with three thousand men and failed to take it. Carlos I had a great fortress built there, which the British blew up in 1812 to drive out the French.
