The new city that emigrants from Tyre founded at the end of the 9th century BCE by the most widely accepted modern dating; the legend of the Aeneid gives it to the Tyrian princess Dido in 814 BCE. After Tyre fell it went its own way and built a state that ruled the western Mediterranean, with four equal quarters around the citadel of Byrsa and a triple wall twenty-five metres high across the isthmus. Scipio Aemilianus destroyed it in 146 BCE.
