The acropolis of Carthage, the citadel on the hill from which the upper city spread, with the temple of Eshmun on top and the great houses of the aristocracy on its slopes. Of those houses, the remains buried under the ash of the fire of 146 BCE have been dug out, from when Scipio Aemilianus took and destroyed the citadel. The summit is occupied today by the cathedral of Saint Louis.
