Ġarnāṭa غرناطة

Role: Capital of the Nasrid kingdom

A minor place beside Ilbīra until the Zīrids made it their taifa capital in 1013, Ġarnāṭa became the seat of the Naṣrid kingdom from 1238, the last Muslim state in Iberia. The Alhambra, the Albaicín and the silk trade made it the richest city of the late Middle Ages in the peninsula; it surrendered on 2 January 1492.
