After the defeat at Vouillé in 507 the Visigoths crossed into Hispania and took Toledo as their capital, and it was here that the councils which governed the kingdom met, and that Reccared renounced Arianism in 589. Little of that capital stands: the Visigothic city spread across the Vega Baja, north of the old town, a site barely excavated under market gardens and building plots. What can be seen of it is in the Museo de los Concilios y de la Cultura Visigoda, in the church of San Román.
