Role: Capital of the conventus Gaditanus

Gadir surrendered to Scipio in 206 BCE and stayed on as a federated city, with its own coinage and free of tax. Julius Caesar gave its people Roman citizenship in 49 BCE, and Balbus the Younger raised a Neapolis beside the old town, with its theatre; under Augustus it was called Augusta Urbs Gaditana. It lived on the sea, on its shipyards and on garum, and its water came by an aqueduct from Tempul.
