The theatre the Balbi raised in the Neapolis of Gades in the 1st century BCE, the oldest known in the peninsula and the second largest, with a cavea 118 metres across and room for some ten thousand. It was abandoned at the end of the 3rd century, and a citadel and later the Castillo de la Villa were built over it. It was found in 1980 and is visited from the interpretation centre on calle Mesón, in the Pópulo quarter.
