Scipio Africanus took Carthaginian Qart Hadasht in 209 BCE, and the city bore the name Carthago Nova until Byzantine rule in the 6th century. Its bay and the silver mines of its hills made it rich, and Diocletian named it capital of the province of Carthaginensis. Of it there remain the theatre of the years 5 to 1 BCE and the forum quarter.
