Motril was conquered in December 1489, rose in 1490 and surrendered for good under the Granada capitulations of 1492. After the Morisco rising of 1507 it was almost emptied; against Barbary and Turkish raids its wall was rebuilt, and even the main church of the Encarnación was built like a fortress. After the rebellion of 1569 it was resettled with four hundred Old Christians.
