Mojácar surrendered to Castile on 13 June 1488, with Cantoria and Huércal, and remained a royal town; Diego López de Haro was charged with sharing out its land. Its coast, between Carboneras and Garrucha, was defended in the 18th century by the Mesa Roldán battery, the Macenas tower and the castle of Jesús Nazareno.
