Garrucha suffered Barbary piracy until a temporary barracks went up at Las Escobetas in 1766 and, in 1769, the castle of Jesús Nazareno, by the architect Francisco Ruiz Garrido, at a cost of 181,000 reales; with the safety it gave, the village began to grow. It is of rubble, in three blocks, with a parapet pierced by arrow slits.
