The Catholic Monarchs took Málaga on 18 August 1487 after a bloody siege, and the cathedral began to rise over the great mosque. As seat of the Captaincy General of the Coast and Kingdom of Granada it organised the fleets, the supply of the North African outposts and the defence of the Mediterranean, at great cost in harbour works, coastal towers and militias; the loss of Gibraltar in 1704 left it holding one of the keys to the Strait.
