The Fuerte Alto de la Caleta was ordered in 1625 to defend La Caleta, with two round towers to the north and two diamond-pointed bastions towards the beach. The state sold it in 1849, and a palace was built inside it between 1929 and 1933; two towers and part of the walls survive in the gardens of the estate, which is a hotel today.
