Mārtula, the Roman Myrtilis, was a river port on the Guadiana, where the river stops being navigable, shipping the metals and grain of the Alentejo to the Mediterranean. It was an independent taifa after 1031 and again from 1144 to 1151 under the mystic Ibn Qasī; the Almohads took it in 1151 and Sancho II of Portugal conquered it in 1238.
