Role: Capital of the Aftasid taifa

Founded around 875 by the rebel Ibn Marwān al-Ŷillīqī as a stronghold on the Guadiana, Baṭalyaws became in the 11th century the capital of the large Afṭasid taifa, stretching from the Tagus to the Atlantic. Alfonso IX of León took it in 1230.
