It began as the enclosure built when the city was founded in the 9th century, was the residence of the Aftasid kings in the 11th and 12th, and most of what stands today went up shortly after 1169 under the Almohad caliph Abu Yaqub Yusuf. With some 1300 m of surviving wall, it is considered the largest alcazaba in Europe.
