The city kept much of its Roman street grid, but it was Christian building that reordered it: the old forum became the episcopal complex, with a great cathedral surrounded by churches, palaces and cemeteries. It was nearly empty in those centuries and survived chiefly because it was a bishopric. What is left of all that is seen beneath the plaza de la Almoina.
