San Millán de Suso

Years: 574–711

The hermit Aemilianus, born in nearby Vergegium, withdrew to these caves and died here in 574, aged a hundred and one, buried in a tomb cut into the rock. A Visigothic community formed around his grave, and bishop Braulio of Zaragoza wrote his life about 635. The monastery went on growing in Mozarabic and Romanesque times, so the Visigothic part is only one piece of what a visitor sees.
