Visigothic kingdom

Santa María de Quintanilla de las Viñas

Today: Mambrillas de Lara, Spain

Years
651–711

A hermitage in the old district of Lara, south of Burgos, of which only the sanctuary and the transept survive from a church that had three aisles. Its outer friezes of scrolls, bunches of grapes and animals in tangent circles, and the reliefs of sun and moon held by angels, are among the finest things this kingdom's art left. It can be visited.
