The Roman capital of Lusitania went on being the greatest city of the peninsular west under the kingdom, and its metropolitan see reached its height at the end of the 6th century and the start of the 7th, before yielding precedence to Toledo. Its church grew around the tomb of Saint Eulalia, the city's martyr, and it is that basilica, today beneath the 13th century church, that a visitor sees of those centuries.
