The hill was the Roman municipium of Ilunum and declined from the mid 2nd century until it was settled again in the 6th. With Visigothic control restored, the see of Eio was created here between 589 and 610 to administer the part of the diocese of Ilici that Byzantium did not hold; its bishops signed at the councils as ilicitanae, qui et eiotanae. After 713 it entered Theodemir's pact, and the Arabic name Madīnat Iyyuh gave today's Minateda.
