The Roman town of the Igaeditani was the seat of a Suebic diocese, already listed at the council of Lugo in 569, and passed into the Visigothic kingdom with the rest of the northwest in 585. Its cathedral was begun about that year, and its mint struck many gold coins. Today it is a village inside the Roman wall, with the cathedral, the baptistery and a museum of carved stones.
