The old Roman capital of Gallaecia was the capital of the Suebic kingdom until Leovigild took it into the Visigothic one, and it went on as the metropolitan see of the northwest. What remains of those years is, two kilometres from the centre, the chapel that bishop Fructuosus had raised in the second half of the 7th century to be buried in.
