A walled hill above the Argos valley, Iberian and later a Roman municipium, which reached its height in late antiquity as an episcopal city: its bishops appear at the Visigothic councils of the 7th century. It served as the bridgehead of the kingdom of Toledo facing the Byzantine province, whose capital was at Carthago Spartaria, and when the Visigoths razed Cartagena it became the chief town of the district.
