The Roman colony of Asido was Byzantine until Leovigild took it by night in 571, helped by a traitor named Framidaneus, according to John of Biclaro. In the Visigothic kingdom it was a bishopric under Seville. Its bishop Pimenius consecrated the basilica of the Holy Martyrs, at the foot of the hill, in 630, and had others raised across his diocese.
