The consul Decimus Junius Brutus discharged his troops from the Lusitanian campaigns in 138 BCE and gave them land on a river island of the Turia, at the best ford on the river, where the Via Heraclea ran. The village soon reached the rank of colonia, among the Iberian towns of Arse, Edeta and Saetabis. An ally of Sertorius, it was partly destroyed by Pompey in 75 BCE and lay abandoned for at least fifty years.
