The Lusitanian leader Viriathus attacked the town on his first expedition north, in 146 BCE, and its people chose to watch their own put to death rather than fail Rome. In 79 BCE, during the Sertorian war, Sertorius's generals were recruiting soldiers here. The aqueduct that brings it water from the sierra is the greatest work of Roman civil engineering in Spain.
