Role: Capital of the Conventus Pacensis

In the time of Augustus the town took the name Pax Iulia and became head of the Conventus Pacensis, one of the three districts the province of Lusitania was divided into, with those of Scallabis and Emerita. The road down to Myrtilis and the Guadiana ran through it. Of the Roman town there remains the arch of the Porta de Évora, standing among the walls of the 3rd or 4th century.
