The theatre's exact date is unknown, but its architecture and decoration point to the early 1st century; an inscription on the proscenium firmly dates a remodelling to the year 57. It fell out of use as the empire ended and was covered by the medieval city. It came to light again in 1798, during the rebuilding of Alfama after the 1755 earthquake, and since 2001 its ruins, a third of the building, are visited inside a museum.
