In 205 BCE Olisipo, one of the towns of the Turduli, allied with Rome and its people fought alongside the legions. Julius Caesar gave it the rank of municipium under the name Felicitas Iulia, and its citizens gained Roman citizenship free of tax, a privilege rare outside Italy. It prospered on trade with Britannia and up the Tagus into the meseta, and what is left of it is the theatre, under the houses of Alfama.
