An Iron Age settlement, occupied at least from the 5th and 4th centuries BCE, which became a Roman town about the second half of the 1st century CE. Under the Flavians it grew to some twenty-eight thousand square metres, and the baths and the paved road to the south-east went up; in the first half of the 2nd century a second set of baths and the hippodrome were added. From the second half of that century there are signs of abandonment, and by the end of the 4th the population had fallen sharply.
