The troops of Scipio Africanus entered in 206 BCE, and in 45 BCE Julius Caesar gave the city the rank of colonia. A river port ninety kilometres from the Atlantic, Hispalis lived on the Baetican oil that went to Rome, where Monte Testaccio was piled up over almost three centuries from the amphorae of these fields. Its houses and mosaics can be seen today in the Antiquarium, under the plaza de la Encarnación.
