The town was called Liberalitas Iulia, and in its forum there rose in the 1st century BCE the temple that still stands, most likely dedicated to the imperial cult of Augustus and not to Diana, as a 17th-century legend would have it. It was altered in the 2nd and 3rd centuries and destroyed in the invasions of the 5th. Of the forum only traces are left in the square the cathedral and the Palácio de Dom Manuel look over today.
