The theatre raised under Tiberius, part of the monumental programme the city gave itself on becoming the head of a conventus. The cavea uses the eastern slope of the hill in the Greek manner, with a portico above and a two-storey stage front between Corinthian columns: 102 metres across and room for some ten thousand, one of the largest in Hispania. In the 2nd century it was made over for use as an amphitheatre, losing part of the lower cavea, the orchestra and the podium of the stage.
