Quintus Sertorius held out here against Pompey for twenty years, and Pompey destroyed what town there was in 72 BCE. The Clunia a visitor walks was laid out afresh under Tiberius: first a municipium, with its own coin struck by its quattuorviri, and between Tiberius and Claudius the seat of a Legatus Iuridicus and head of the conventus Cluniensis. Galba was proclaimed emperor here, which is why some add his name to the city's.
