Villa de Materno
Today: Carranque, Spain
- Years
- 301–409
A lordly villa of the 4th century beside the Guadarrama, in the upper Sagra, perhaps raised by Maternus Cynegius, uncle of the emperor Theodosius, and carrying the name written on the label of its main bedroom. A few metres away stand a mausoleum and a hall of state of about the year 400, comparable to the governors' palaces of southern Gaul. A neighbour found it while ploughing in 1983.
