There was no Roman city at this crossing of the Tagus. There was a bridge, raised between 104 and 106 by order of Trajan on the road from Augusta Emerita to Bracara Augusta, and paid for by twelve municipia of the district whose names are cut on an inscription. Beside its southern end stands the small votive temple that tradition gives to the same engineer. The town that later grew beside the work took its name from it, al-Qanṭara, "the bridge".
