The trading post the Phoenicians founded in the 8th century BCE facing the Alboran Sea, at a key point on the routes of the western Mediterranean. From the 6th century BCE it was under Carthaginian control, inside the exchange system that joined Carthage to the peninsula, and Rome took it in during the 2nd century BCE. The walled citadel a visitor sees today stands on that Phoenician and Punic fortification.
