A Phoenician and Tartessian settlement dated to at least the 10th century BCE, where newcomers from the eastern Mediterranean and the local people lived mixed together. It lived on metalwork and on trade with the Riotinto mines, down a river Tinto far fuller then than now. By the 6th century BCE the eastern and the Tartessian elements can no longer be told apart in the town, and the century after brought the collapse of the metal trade.
