Phoenician and Carthaginian

La Fonteta

Today: Guardamar del Segura, Spain

Years
800 BCE–501 BCE

A Phoenician port city of the 8th to the 6th centuries BCE on the right bank of the Segura estuary, the way in to the trade routes of the interior. It may have reached eight hectares, which puts it among the chief Phoenician cities of the Mediterranean, and it had an enormous wall, a rare thing on Phoenician sites in the peninsula. The sands that buried it preserved it better than almost any other.
