- The easternmost Phoenician colony in Andalusia
One of the oldest towns in the south of the peninsula, beside the mouth of the Almanzora, whose settlement seems to begin in the 7th century BCE and which is reckoned the easternmost Phoenician foundation in Andalusia. Scipio Africanus besieged it in 209 BCE, after taking Cartago Nova, and it took him time to secure. Its coins and its cemetery show that Phoenician and Punic ways were still alive here in the 2nd century BCE.
