A Phoenician trading colony founded in the 8th century BCE on the hill of Monte Cristo, the oldest town in the province of Almería. It was an important port through the 8th and 7th centuries BCE and declined towards the 6th; from the 4th century BCE it was under Punic control. Its name was written in the Phoenician alphabet in inscriptions of the 2nd century BCE, and today's Adra comes from it.
