Vélez-Málaga

Vélez-Málaga was conquered in 1487 and became the head of the Axarquía, with Torre del Mar shipping its wine and citrus to northern Europe. In the 17th century Turkish and Barbary pirates raided constantly: the watchtowers raised the alarm for the garrison at Vélez, which for a time housed the Captaincy General of the Coast. On 23 August 1704 the naval battle of Vélez-Málaga was fought off its coast.
