After the conquest of 1489 the Naṣrid citadel of Salobreña passed to Francisco Ramírez de Madrid, and Castile enlarged it in the late 15th century with two defensive enclosures: the entrance tower, the outer barrier with El Cubo and La Batería, and the walled passage guarding its water supply. It kept its military importance until the 18th century and is one of the most visited monuments of the Granada coast today.
