A town founded by the Umayyads in the late 8th century, the only major town of al-Andalus in the middle Guadiana valley, on the road between Córdoba and Toledo. It passed to Castile in 1147, returned to the Almohads in 1195 and was the birthplace of the Order of Calatrava. Today it is an archaeological park, with two 9th-century bent-entrance gates.
