The oldest Muslim fortification in the peninsula, built by the emir ʿAbd al-Raḥmān II in 835 beside the Roman bridge over the Guadiana to command a city that had rebelled in 805. It is part of the archaeological ensemble of Mérida, a World Heritage Site, and can be visited.
