The caliphal fortress that the general Ġālib built or rebuilt in 965 and 966 on the orders of al-Ḥakam II, over an earlier castle, to guard the Duero and Medinaceli; according to the historian Roger Collins it was the largest in Europe in its day. It withstood the great Christian siege of 974 and 975. Visitors walk the long enclosure on the hilltop, with its towers and the great Caliphal Gate of Umayyad origin.
